Elco Thunderbolt Mark 15 Mount

Elco developed a gun-mount for PT boats that was a quad 20mm gun mounting with two .50 caliber machine guns outboard of the four 20mm guns, but the mounts that were tested on the 556, 557, 558 and 559 just mounted the four 20mm guns. It was tested on board PT-139 and then, operationally tested on four of Squadron 29’s boats; PTs 556 to 559. It was also installed for some period on PT-174, a Southwest Pacific boat.

These drawings and photos are courtesy of my good friend Wayne Traxel and Jerry J. Foley, the historian of Squadron 29.
